THE Textile Clothing and Footwear Union wants Kevin Rudd to raise tariffs on imported goods, arguing that dumping of Third World products on Australian markets is a greater problem than the Howard Government's industrial relations laws.

But the Opposition Leader has emphatically rejected a return to protectionism amid federal government claims that a Labor government would be controlled by the Socialist Left and would wind back decades of economic reform and trade liberalisation.
