When Dr Mohamad Abdalla took to the lectern at Cairns City Council’s Peace Week talk, he brought levity to a serious subject.
Tall, bearded and with a kind face, he looks a man of peace, but his robed appearance has meant he has had to think on his feet in certain situations.
“You probably thought it’s Osama bin Laden,” the doctor once told a student audience in Gympie post 9/11, when he heard laughter as he entered the room.
“It’s not. It’s Mohamad Abdalla from Brisbane.”
Libyan born and Australian raised, Dr Abdalla went on a path of spiritual enlightenment at the age of 21, a time he says when “young men explore material life”.
